Instant Segmentation of Oysters in the Chesapeake Bay

Abstract
Oysters are an essential species in the Chesapeake Bay living ecosystem. Oysters are filter feeders and are considered the vacuum cleaners of the Chesapeake Bay that can considerably improve the water quality. Recent advancements in robotics and artificial intelligence have opened new opportunities in the domain of aquaculture. Drone-like ROVs with high maneuverability are getting more affordable and, if equipped with proper sensory devices, can be used for detection and segmentation of oysters and generation of oyster size and frequency maps subsequently. We present our efforts for videography of the Chesapeake bay bottom using an ROV to construct an oyster database and for the implementation of Mask R-CNN used in the detection and segmentation of oysters.
