Josiah Bedford and John Dutan

 

Department of Mechanical Engineering students Josiah Bedford and John Dhutan received 2021 A. James Clark School of Engineering Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering (CMSE) Leadership Awards during the May 5 Clark School Honors and Awards Ceremony.

The Center for Minorities in Science and Engineering Leadership Awards are presented to students who through service and leadership provide outstanding support to CMSE initiatives and programming.

Bedford is a senior with a minor in computer science. He is a graduate of the College Park Scholars program from the Science, Technology, and Society community. Josiah has served as a Clark School Ambassador, speaking to prospective engineering students. He is a research assistant in the Neuromechanics Research Core, developing machine-learning techniques to predict knee adduction moment. He is the current president of the Black Engineers Society and serves on the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) National Membership Committee. After graduating, Josiah plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Robotics.

Dutan is a third-year student and a member of the QUEST Honors Program. John is also this year’s president for the UMD chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), where he organizes events for Latinx STEM students across campus. John previously worked researching in the Autonomous Systems Laboratory and the Space Systems Laboratory as a part of the Louis Stokes Alliances for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Undergraduate Research Program. He will intern this summer at Lockheed Martin for their Rotary Mission Systems branch as a Control Systems Engineer in Philadelphia, Penn.
