U.S. News & World Report?s "America's Best Graduate Schools 2006" ranks the A. James Clark School of Engineering Department of Mechanical Engineering graduate program as one of the more favorable in the nation. The Mechanical Engineering graduate program ranked 20th overall, and in the top 12 in Grad programs among public institutions. The department ties with the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Virginia Tech. Last year the ME program ranked 24th.

?The dramatic rise in our rankings over the past few years is a clear testament to the quest for academic excellence the department has embraced and practiced,? states Mechanical Engineering Chair Dr. Avram Bar-Cohen.

The Clark School of Engineering as a whole is ranked number 17th, tied with Princeton.

In other rankings news, The University of Maryland Department of Mechanical Engineering has consistently ranked in the top sixteen in total research and development expenditures at American colleges and universities, according to recent National Science Foundation (NSF) studies. Research conducted in 1999 through 2002 and published in the National Science Foundation documents Academic Research and Development Expenditures: Fiscal Years 1999 ? 2002, show that the University of Maryland ME department has ranked 12th in 1999 and 2000, 15th in 2001, and 16th in 2002.
