For the second summer in a row, the University of Maryland (UMD) chapter of the Mechanical Contractors’ Association of America (MCA) pitched in during the Maryland Special Olympics Summer Games, held this year at Towson University’s Johnny Unitas Stadium from June 12-14.
MCAA volunteers assisted the athletes at a number of track events, escorting them to relays and helping with medal ceremonies. Naomi Miatudia, the chapter’s outreach director, led the volunteer effort in collaboration with outgoing chapter president Gabriella Anthony, who graduated this past May.
UMD’s MCAA chapter is a two-time winner of the Chapter of the Year award, having landed the prize in 2022 and again in 2024. Much of its focus during the school year is on a national-level challenge that replicates real-work projects and processes, from drawing up estimates and schedules to identifying the needed equipment and materials.
At the same time, outreach and volunteering are crucial components of the chapter’s activities, providing an avenue for building community involvement.
