UM President and Professor C.D. Mote, Jr. (mechanical engineering)

The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has elected C. Dan Mote, Jr., as its new treasurer beginning July 1. Mote is president of the University of Maryland, College Park, and Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of Engineering in the Clark School's Department of Mechanical Engineering.

Mote succeeds William L. Friend, retired executive vice president of the Bechtel Group Inc., who has served two consecutive terms as treasurer, the maximum tenure allowed by the Academy's bylaws.

The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964 under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. It is autonomous in its administration and in the selection of its members, sharing with NAS the responsibility for advising the federal government.

NAE promotes the technological welfare of the nation by marshaling the knowledge and insights of eminent members of the engineering profession.
