Professor S.K. Gupta (ME/ISR) is the recipient of the inaugural Kos Ishii-Toshiba Award, given by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle committee. The award was presented August 30 at ASME?s 2011 International Design Engineering Technical Conferences (IDETC 2011) in Washington, D.C.

The award is given to recognize the sustained meritorious contributions to the use of optimization and other modeling techniques to support design, manufacturing and the life cycle management decisions in product development.

The award honors Kosuke ?Kos? Ishii, a professor of mechanical engineering at Stanford University and director of the Manufacturing Modeling Laboratory there. Ishii was known for his dedication to teaching manufacturing design and his strong partnership with Toshiba, for which he and his father had worked. He passed away unexpectedly in 2009 at the age of 51.
