Ishita Chakraborty, a Ph.D. student in the University of Maryland’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, was awarded Honorable Mention for her poster “Near-grazing Dynamics of Elastic Structures: Application to AFM and Effects of Noise” at the 2011 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition in Denver, CO. A doctoral advisee of Dr. Bala Balachandran, Department Chair, Chakraborty’s poster dealt primarily with atomic force microscopes (AFMs) and the macro-scale study of “AFM-like” attractive-repulsive forces. In particular, using numerical, experimental, and analytical techniques, she sought a new method for AFM operation in order to minimize tip-sample forces. The poster also examined the potential impact of this research on commercial AFM use.

According to ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers), “the annual ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition is a premier global conference that focuses on today's technical challenges, research updates and breakthrough innovations that are shaping the future of engineering.” For more information on the 2011 Congress, visit ASME Congress 2011.
