Students, parents, alumni, corporate sponsors, faculty and staff,  provided an enthusiastic audience to witness the public debut of the University of Maryland’s 2012 Formula SAE racing car at Maryland Day on April 28th.  University President Wallace Loh greeted the crowd and helped remove the cover which revealed the sleek black racer to a cheering crowd of over 70 people in front of the Jeong H. Kim Building.

Dean Darryll Pines of the Clark School of Engineering welcomed the attendees and highlighted the importance of experiential learning programs like Terps Racing. Mechanical engineering chair, Dr. B. Balachandran thanked the students, parents, alumni and friends who were in attendance and Dr. Gregory Schultz, the faculty advisor for the program gave an overview of the history of the program and progress of this year’s team.  Lead engineer and junior engineering student, Steven Chung expressed the team’s gratitude for the support they had received over the past year.   Alumnus and loyal supporter, Bill Leasure shared his long relationship with the team and motivation for supporting the program.   Most of the resources supporting Terps Racing are provided by corporate sponsors, alumni, parents and friends.

The car is designed and built by students to compete in national and international formula racing competitions.   The team is ranked 8th in the world. The Terps Racing team will compete in its first competition in this new car in the FSAE West competition in Lincoln, Nebraska on June 14.
