Distinguished University Professor Ashwani Gupta’s research paper titled "Mixture Preparation Effects on Distributed Combustion for Gas Turbine Applications” was the fourth most downloaded research article at ASME’s Journal of Energy Resources Technology.

Gupta began developing the idea of achieving a uniform thermal field in the burning zone of a gas turbine’s combustion chamber more than five years ago.  Creating a uniform thermal field prevents formation of hot spots from forming in the chamber, reducing the number of pollutants generated from the engine, such as nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and soot.  Gupta guided graduate student Ahmed Khalil’s research work in this topic, and also collaborated with K. Mark Bryden from Iowa State University and Sang C. Lee from Kyungnam University in South Korea.  Lee also assisted Gupta in coordinating technology transfer efforts in South Korea and elsewhere.

“I am so pleased with so much interest from the technical community worldwide,” Gupta said.  “I believe it is a very important topic for our quest to significantly improve combustion performance and reduce emissions from gas turbine combustion systems.”  Gupta’s research could be used in high efficiency stationary power gas turbine engines that produce power and electricity, resulting in significant energy savings and reduction in the amount of pollutants generated at power plants.
