On June 29, Prof. Ali Mosleh, Nicole J. Kim Professor of Mechanical Engineering and director of the University of Maryland’s Center for Risk and Reliability, presented the closing plenary lecture of the Eleventh International Conference on Probabilistic Safety and Management (PSAM-11), held in Helsinki, Finland. In his talk, “Delivering on the Promise: PRA, Decisions, and Real Events,” Mosleh reflected on the impact of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA), asking important questions about the effectiveness, performance, and expectations of PRA methodologies. In addition to the closing talk, Mosleh presented several papers and chaired three sessions at the conference.

Mosleh holds a doctorate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles. A member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of the Society for Risk Analysis, his research engages a number of areas of reliability engineering, including PRA, human reliability analysis, models of the influence of organizational factors on system risk, Bayesian methods for inference with uncertain evidence, and expert judgment, among others. He has received several scientific achievement awards and served as a technical advisor to numerous organizations. He was appointed in 2004 by President George W. Bush to the U.S. Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, a role in which he continues to serve in the  President Barack Obama Administration.
