Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (ChBE) Associate Professor Chunsheng Wang is the 2013 recipient of the Junior Faculty Outstanding Research Award.

Wang is a leader in the field of electrochemistry and nanostructured materials, and his research focuses on energy conversion and energy storage systems. His innovations, such as a solvent-free composite PEO-ceramic fiber/mat electrolytes for lithium batteries, serve as a model in the field.

"Dr. Wang's research in the field of applied electrochemistry has greatly advanced the understanding of  lithium-ion transport and synthesizing polymeric and inorganic nanostructured materials for electrolyte and electrode applications," said Clark School Dean and Farvardin Professor of Aerospace Engineering Darryll Pines.

Wang, who is also affiliated with the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), joined the University of Maryland faculty in 2007 to be part of the University of Maryland Energy Research Center (UMERC). He advises an undergraduate Chem-E Car team, which won first place at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers’ (AIChE) mid-Atlantic Regional Conference's Chem-E Car Competition in 2011. Wang received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 1995.

Professor Wang's research activities focused on three areas: Li-ion batteries, Na-ion batteries, alkaline fuel cells, and electroanalytical techniques. These research activities cover topics from fundamental electrochemistry and materials synthesis to electrochemical devices. He was the recent recipient of an ARPA-E research grant for innovative energy storage systems for electric vehicles. Learn more about Professor Wang's research at his bio page.
