Mechanical Engineering graduate student Caleb Holloway has been awarded an L-3 Communications Graduate Fellowship for the 2013-2014 academic year.  Advised by Professor Avram Bar-Cohen, Holloway's research involves the thermal management of high powered electronics with the forced flow of fluid, undergoing phase change in micro-scale channels.

For the L-3 Communications fellowship, Holloway describes his proposed research as "building upon the two-phase micro-scale channel, but with improved area enhancement using innovative pin fin structures."  The goal of his work is to characterize the hydrodynamic and thermal behavior of a two phase micro pin fin cooler and to directly embed it into the substrate of a GaN power amplifier.

Pin fins are heat sinks used in electronics to help provide cooling and dissipate the heat generated.

In response to receiving this fellowship, Holloway said, "It is an incredible honor and blessing to receive this prestigious fellowship from L-3 Communications. I have cherished my relationship with L-3 Communications and their devoted interest in my research and abilities. This fellowship will only further strengthen our relationship and collaborative efforts."

The L-3 Communications Graduate Fellowship is awarded to graduate students that have demonstrated a record of academic excellence, with an emphasis on experience and commitment to their academic and professional careers.
