The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) elevated Department of Mechanical Engineering Associate Professor Linda Schmidt to the rank of "Fellow" for her influential role in the development of the field of engineering design and her lasting contributions to these fields. ASME Fellows are individuals who have been responsible for significant engineering achievements, and have 10 or more years of active practice and membership in ASME.

Schmidt has been integral in furthering Mechanical Engineering's hands-on design curriculum, particularly the capstone design course: Integrated Product and Process Development. She has a particular interest in developing student project team training materials that build more effective engineering student project teams.

In fall 2014, Schmidt was one of 77 educators invited to participate in the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) sixth Frontiers of Engineering Education (FOEE) Symposium. NAE chose individuals who developed and implemented innovative educational approaches across a variety of engineering disciplines.

In addition, she has co-authored two editions of “Engineering Design,” a major design text publication of McGraw-Hill Higher Education. In 2008, the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) recognized Schmidt for her work in design research and education by awarding her the Fred Merryfield Design Award.

Schmidt received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University in industrial engineering with a specialization in queuing theory. She completed her doctorate in Mechanical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University and developed a grammar-based, generate and optimize approach to mechanical design.

ASME enables collaboration, knowledge sharing, career enrichment and skills development across all engineering disciplines, with the goal of helping the global engineering community develop solutions to benefit lives and livelihoods.
