The University of Maryland (UMD) Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA) student chapter assisted with the Maryland Special Olympics Summer Games, held from June 22-24 in Towson.
Students Gabriella Anthony, Naomi Miatudila, Amelia Nur, and Peampat Suphaphon were on hand during the event, helping to organize heats, prepare medal ceremonies, and announce results.
“We were thrilled to have this opportunity to be part of this event, which empowers and celebrates athletes with disabilities,” said Anthony, the student chapter president and a current energy engineering intern at Boland.
It was one of several community outreach events involving the chapter, which has also visited Maryland K-12 schools to talk with students about engineering and share an educational activity, GOALKits, that is produced each year by Women in Engineering.
The UMD chapter, which netted an MCAA Chapter of the Year award in 2022 and again in 2024, participates in a national-level challenge each year that replicates real-work projects and processes, from drawing up estimates and schedules to identifying the needed equipment and materials. The 2024-25 project centered around the mechanical retrofit of a medical research building in New York City.
Fitzgerald Walker, academic advisor and manager for undergraduate outreach and recruitment at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, is the MCAA chapter’s advisor.
