Samuel Graham, Nariman Farvardin Professor and Dean of the A. James Clark School of Engineering, has been elevated to the status of Fellow by the American Society of Thermal and Fluids Engineers (ASTFE), the leading international body in the thermal and fluids engineering field.
He joins three other distinguished experts who have been selected as 2026 Fellows: Alain Kassab (University of Central Florida), Zhuomin Zhang (Georgia Institute of Technology), and Yi Zheng (Northeastern University).
“I am deeply honored to be elevated to Fellow of ASTFE,” Graham said. “ASTFE Fellows include some of the field’s leading innovators in thermal sciences and fluids engineering. This achievement reflects the hard work of the outstanding students, postdocs, and collaborators I’ve had the opportunity to work with throughout my career. I am thankful that my colleagues in the field have recognized our work in this manner.”
In naming Graham a Fellow, ASTFE cited his contributions to advanced thermal metrology techniques and the electro-thermal design of new Wide Bandgap (WBG) electronic devices for RF power and optoelectronic applications.
Graham has received numerous accolades for his research in this area, including the American Society of Mechanical Engineering’s Allan Kraus Thermal Management Award. His specific contributions include novel architectures that enable efficient heat dissipation from devices that utilize gallium nitride (GaN) and gallium oxide (Ga2O3) as semiconductors.
The materials being investigated by Graham support operation at higher voltages, frequencies, and temperatures compared to standard semiconductors, such as silicon.
About ASFTE
Established in 2014 to promote thermal and fluids engineering, ASTFE organizes lectures, short courses, symposia, and conferences, while also providing professional networking opportunities across a broad spectrum of disciplines and sub-disciplines of the field.
The status of ASTFE Fellow is the highest membership grade in the organization, with the others being Member and Student Member. Fellows are selected by the ASFTE Board of Directors on the recommendation of the ASTFE Honors and Awards Council.
