Professor S.K. Gupta (ME/ISR) is quoted in an article in Science News about new research that reveals when crawling, a caterpillar?s stomach advances an entire step forward before the outside of its body catches up.

Gupta, the director of the Maryland Robotics Center, told the publication the discovery could have ramifications for engineers who design soft-bodied robots. Such robots could be used to search tight places such as mine shafts, spaces behind walls or the rubble of a fallen building.
