Prof. Teng Li  won a travel fellowship to attend the 23rd International Congress on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (ICTAM), held in Beijing August 19-24.  Dr. Li is one of 22 U.S. citizens and permanent residents to receive the fellowship to present a paper at the Congress, which is held every four years.  Dr. Li will present his research, supported by the National Science Foundation, on the bucking instability of carbon nanoscrolls and its potential applications.  A carbon nanoscroll is formed by rolling up a monolayer of grapheme, which creates an open structure unlike carbon nanotubes.  Dr. Li’s research reports contains the first study of buckling instability of carbon nanoscrolls that is distinct from carbon nanotubes and its potential application on molecular mass transport through carbon nanoscrolls.  As the co-founder of iMechanica.org, the largest international online community of mechanics, Dr. Li has been working closely with the ICTAM organizing committee to publicize the upcoming conference.
