The Clark School of Engineering is ranked No. 16 and recognized as one of the world's top engineering programs by the 2013 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU).

The University of Maryland was also ranked this year as No. 38 worldwide, No. 29 in the U.S., and No. 13 among U.S. public research institutions.

Since 2003, the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University has published the ARWU. The rankings are based on each school's number of highly cited researchers, the number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, the number of articles indexed in the Science Citation Index - Expanded, the number of staff and alumni who have received Nobel Prizes and Field Medals, and per capita performance with respect to the size of an institution.
