Title: Structure-Property-Function Relationships of Hybrid Nano and Bio-Nano Materials

Abstract:

Materials at the nanoscale exhibit novel electronic, optical, and other physical properties different from bulk or molecular counterparts. Nanomaterials with similar geometrical and electronic strictures also exhibit properties vastly different from each other depending upon their elemental composition. It is interesting to know what happens to their properties when different nanomaterials are bought together to form a composite or hybrid structure.  A similar question can be asked about hybrid bio—nano materials. Since nanomaterials have dimensions similar to biomolecular building blocks such as enzymes, proteins, and nucleic acids, whose functions are intimately related to their strictures, it is of interest to ask how they interact and what happens to their individual and combined properties when they are brought together. This talk will present the structure-property-function relationships of selected hybrid nanomaterials and bio-nano materials studied by first-principles quantum mechanical and experimental investigations.
