Abstract:

The neutron is present in all but one of the 3000 known atomic nuclei, and it is the only nuclear particle with no electric charge. These features make possible the neutron chain reactions that are the source of nuclear power, and the analysis of materials that are opaque to light or x-rays. Neutrons can boldly go where no particle has gone before, to discover water on planetary bodies. The Washington, DC metropolitan area is a world center of neutron-based materials research, with numerous opportunities available at the University of Maryland and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

Bio:

Charles Clark is a Fellow of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a Fellow of the Joint Quantum Institute, and Affiliate Professor of the Institute for Physical Science and Technology. He has helped many University of Maryland students to find research opportunities at NIST. https://jqi.umd.edu/people/charles-clark
