Title: Getting from here to there: Why scale bridging is important

Abstract:

Scale bridging problems define many of our important materials engineering problems, in energy systems, alloys, biomedical devices, and cancer research. As engineers and scientists we have effective analytical methods for describing materials at length scales of meters down to 10 microns, and from atoms to the unit cell, but in the so-called meso scale, we observe emergent behavior with limited understanding. Our lack of understanding of phenomena on this scale makes it challenging to fulfill the promise of quantum mechanics as a design paradigm for materials engineering. The goal of this seminar is to stimulate discussion on a useful pedagogy for mastering scale bridging, some examples from the Energy and Materials group at the Toyota Research Institute will be discussed as a proxy for such a pedagogy.

Bio:

Abraham Anapolsky is a Senior Manager in the Energy and Materials Division at the Toyota Research Institute. Dr. Anapolsky received his B.S. in physics from San Francisco State University, and an M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of California. Dr. Anapolsky has three decades of experience in energy materials ranging from photovoltaics to batteries, shape memory alloys, magnetic materials and high entropy alloys; and numerous patents and publications in these areas.
