Whiting-Turner Lecture
Abstract: On top of the existing challenges facing the traditional banking business model such as revenue pressure and low profitability, tighter regulation, and increasing competition, in addition to the COVID-19 Crisis, all create a need for innovation. How does a 145-year old conservative retail bank based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania innovate to position itself for the future while seeking to support challenged urban centers and a growing innovative, entrepreneurial mindset? In his lecture, Bret Schreiber will explore how Fulton Bank, through the creation of a new Life Science and Technology Division, is disrupting banking, while at the same time, supporting the economic growth and vitality of major urban centers like Baltimore and Philadelphia. We will explore how early-stage innovators, entrepreneurs, and life science companies can become critical to an entrepreneurial ecosystem, and how Fulton Bank is stepping into this effort to serve as a catalyst to drive the industry to new levels. Bio: Bret Schreiber has worked for 20 years in the field of government and community relations, driving policy and economic development initiatives and developing strong ties to local, state, and national legislators and policy leaders. Currently, Schreiber is Vice President for Life Sciences and Technology for Fulton Bank, a $26 billion financial institution. He oversees the development of a new division for the institution that is creating disruptive, innovative initiatives to support and grow the life science and technology industries. Previously, Schreiber was recruited to the Maryland Department of Commerce to start a new Division in education and innovation and then went on to lead the Office of BioHealth and Life Sciences within the Department of Commerce. Prior to this, he was the Director of Governmental and Community Relations for Harford County Maryland and also served as a vice-president of the Maryland Independent College and University Association (MICUA), leading policy development and involved in organizational operations. Schreiber spent 10 years working with the Johns Hopkins Institutions helping to manage the Johns Hopkins Institutions' strategic State agenda with elected and appointed officials. Bret Schreiber holds a bachelor's degree in political science from Johns Hopkins University and studied at Loyola University Maryland. A lacrosse player for the nationally-ranked Johns Hopkins University Blue Jays, Schreiber counts family members among his biggest influencers.
