This week?s issue of The Chronicle of Higher Education ranked the University of Maryland?s Department of Mechanical Engineering in the A. James Clark School of Engineering among the top 10 mechanical engineering programs in the country, providing dramatic evidence for the Department?s growing visibility on the national stage. Mechanical Engineering at Maryland ranked tenth in its category, 4th among public institutions, headed by UC-Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology (#5), and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign (#9). The survey examines the number of book and journal articles published by each program's faculty, as well as journal citations, awards, honors, and grants received.

The 2005 index compiles overall institutional rankings on 166 large research universities, which include 15 or more Ph.D. programs, as well as 61 smaller research universities, which contain between one and 14 Ph.D. programs.

In the Large Research Universities category, Maryland ranks 11th among public research universities, 31st overall. Among public institutions it is followed by the University of Illinois, Champagne-Urbana and preceded by the University of California at San Diego. University of California, Berkeley ranked first.

The Faculty Scholarly Productivity Index, partly financed by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and produced by Academic Analytics, a for-profit company, rates faculty members' scholarly output at nearly 7,300 doctoral programs around the country.
