Distinguished University Professor and Minta Martin Professor Ashwani Gupta has been elected an International Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering (CAE) in recognition of his notable achievements.
He is among a small group of highly accomplished engineers from around the world who are selected for this honor each year by the CAE, which is one of Canada’s three national academies. Among other activities, it provides strategic advice to the Canadian government on engineering-related topics.
“This is an incredible honor for which I am deeply appreciative,” Gupta said. “It reflects not only my own efforts, but those of my collaborators, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers. The CAE has been at the forefront of efforts to promote the responsible use of engineering knowledge to address critical societal challenges, both in Canada and internationally, and I’m excited to have the opportunity to contribute to its mission.”
A member of the University of Maryland’s mechanical engineering faculty since 1983, Gupta has won international acclaim for pioneering a revolutionary new combustion method known as high-temperature air combustion, or “Green Flame.” It produces an environmentally benign flame with very low nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide emissions, thus allowing for greener, cleaner, and more efficient industrial furnaces. The approach is now being used worldwide.
He has authored more than 330 journal papers, 580 conference papers, three books, 18 edited books, and 22 book chapters. His many accolades include honorary fellowships in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Royal Aeronautical Society. In 2023, he was inducted into the Royal Academy of Engineering. Recent honors include the American Society of Thermal Fluid Engineers (ASTFE) award, an Achievement Honour from the the United Kingdom’s National Indian Students and Alumni Union, and a John Leland Atwood award given jointly by the American Society for Engineering Education and the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
Gupta is also a Fellow of AIAA, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Society of Automotive Engineers, and a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts.
He holds higher doctorates from the University of Sheffield, and the University of Southampton, and honorary doctorates from the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, King Mungkut University of Technology, and the University of Derby.
“I am delighted to welcome the new Fellows to the Academy whose impressive accomplishments and leadership in their respective fields have significantly advanced engineering in both Canada and around the world," said CAE President Catherine Karakatsanis. "Their outstanding contributions and dedication to excellence serve as an inspiration to us all.”
A formal induction ceremony will be held on June 1 in Edmonton, Alberta.
