Department of Mechanical Engineering master’s student Ben Dryer recently received the Society of Plastics Engineers' (SPE) Lew Erwin Extrusion Division Award for 2015. The Lew Erwin Memorial scholarship provides financial support to graduate researchers performing exceptional research in the field of polymer extrusion.
Dryer, who completed his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Maryland in 2014, is currently researching mixing in the polymer extrusion process and its effect on final product properties. He is working under advisor Associate Professor David Bigio.
The purpose of SPE's Extrusion Division is to advance the technical body of knowledge in the field of plastics extrusion industry as a whole through conducting seminars at all levels of proficiency, by promoting extrusion technical activities at the local levels of the Society and by publishing plastics extrusion technical information which otherwise might not be disseminated.
