Professor Don DeVoe has been awarded a 2013 University System of Maryland Regents Faculty Award for Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity.

This award is presented each spring by the Board of Regents to up to 17 exemplary faculty members across the University System of Maryland to publicly recognize those who have "shown evidence of exceptional scholarship, research, or creative accomplishments that extend or deepen the bounds of knowledge." Awardees are selected by the Council of University System Faculty and submitted to the Board of Regents for approval.

“This is a richly-deserved recognition, and all of us at the University take great pride in this outstanding accomplishment,” University of Maryland President Wallace Loh said in a letter to DeVoe.

DeVoe’s research lies at the intersection of engineering and medicine. His team has begun a collaboration with clinical researchers at the Children’s National Medical Center to investigate the use of microfluidic-synthesized lipid nanoparticles as targeted drug delivery vehicles.  This project could be applied to cancer treatments or to new methods of delivering topical anesthetics.

“This award reflects the creative output of a fantastic team of researchers who I have been fortunate to have in my group over the years,” DeVoe said.

Dr. DeVoe, who specializes in Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) and microfluidic systems, is a professor in the Mechanical Engineering department, and also serves as an affiliate faculty member of two other departments at the Clark School: the Fischell Bioengineering Department and the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department.

Dr. DeVoe is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the American Chemical Society (ACS). Dr. DeVoe received the prestigious Presidential Early Career (PECASE) Award for advances in microsystems technology. He received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1997.

The Regents Faculty Award will be presented to Prof. DeVoe at a University System of Maryland board meeting on April 12.
