The University of Maryland’s Center for Advanced Life Cycle Engineering (CALCE) Director Michael Pecht was quoted in an IEEE Spectrum article on technologies and safety measures for preventing fires in lithium-ion batteries.

In the article, titled "Can Signal Processing Stop Battery Fires?", Pecht pointed out that many battery-management systems monitor only a battery’s current flow over time. Pecht explained that his research team is developing battery-management systems that track current, voltage, temperature, mechanical strain, and other operating parameters. The system provides an automated warning when the battery needs servicing.
